White people born and bred in Africa - are they Africans or not?

I'm thinking of places like South Africa and Zimbabwe.

What is their status?

He lives in the US now. He is African-American just like Charlize Theron.

According the South African Government and the standards they use for their own census, no. They are "white." Here are the categories reflected in their Census figures:

  • Black African
  • Coloured
  • Indian or Asian
  • White
  • Other

I would say yes, but to be more specific I'd refer to them as Euro-Africans. Labels are tricky tho, for example, I'm a native New Mexican, but I'm not Mexican, new, or a native (indigenous).

Yes. African means you are from Africa. It's not a race or a color.

According to the Human Genome Project, we all derive from a common set of ancestors who originated in Africa.

Ergo, we are all African. Does that answer your question?

Interesting. So when they were running things down there, they didn't even want to be called African? Hmm.

In Zimbabwe, the answer would also be, "No."

Their 2012 Census enumerates Zimbabweans as:

  • African
  • European
  • Asiatic
  • Mixed race
  • Other
