It's Obama derangement syndrome. Obama is to blame for everything....people retiring, losing one sock in a pair, the rain.
^ ^This. My cat peed outside her litter box this morning. Somehow I'm sure it's a direct result of having a lying, socialist, Muslim Kenyan in the White House who's hell bent on destroying America by raising taxes, increasing immigration, hating Christianity, not creating new jobs, spending all of our money, meeting with the president of Mexico, pushing the gay agenda, and playing 10 seconds of hip hop at a public event. It was all just too much for her little cat bladder to take. Damn you Obama!!!
Darn those baby boomers retiring. We should chain them to the desk and force them to keep working!
Many would love to but cannot find work. I, personally, know three people who have taken early retirements because they could not find a job who would rather be working. Do not assume that all retirements were voluntary. When you're 62 and you've been out of work for two years, taking SS early can be a way to keep eating.
People retiring before they are ready is a HUGE problem because they will, eventually, run out of money and then society will have to step in. I'm 54 and losing my job in June. If I cannot find work, I will have no choice but to tap my IRA (used up my emergency savings last time I lost my job to a downsizing in 2007 and I've been working for half my former salary since 2008 so I've been unable to build that safety net back up.). I am not ready to retire at 54 and don't want to but I'm having no luck finding work. The companies that are hiring, want new grads not people with silver hair. I figure my IRA will last me 5 years (with the tax penalties for having to tap it early) before I have to sell the house and go live on a beach somewhere in the south.
Don't joke about this. Some of us baby boomers are in a world of hurt over the timing of losing jobs and being unable to find a new one. I, for one, have no idea how I'll get from 54 to 62 (the earlist I can get anything from social security - no pension because the company I worked for for 17 years went bankrupt). The $400K I have in my IRA is nowhere near enough if I cannot find work.
I am very concerned as I've watched three friends give up. They, fortunately, are a little older than me, and closer to when they intended to retire, or have spouses who are working (my dh is retiring this year - no choice as his company is closing (he has no pension because his company doesn't offer one)). I don't know what I'm going to do if I can't find work with two kids in college.

Don’t be fooled into looking at the Dow as your economic barometer. That’s for the lazy, the amateurs, the armchair partisan economists.”
I'm not being fooled. But I would say that the Dow being up (in general) for several years at least somewhat points to our economy not being in the toilet, no?
There is a general hysteric rant from some posters on here that Obama is a socialist. He isn't really and everyone deep down knows that. One may not like him but he is not dragging this country down. I'm not an expert in the least at economics and won't pretend to know as much as perhaps you do about the subject. But my personal experience and the experience of most of my friends and family is that we are doing fine. I realize that may not translate to everybody or to the country but everyone that can think straight knows that America is not headed to hell in a hand basket.

If Obama was a Republican they would be wanting his face on Mount Rushmore for taking out bin laden and turning the economy around, but he's a Democrat. That means the mere mentioning of his name causes righties to foam at the mouth and start spouting off nonsense.

Again, pointing to one number is never a smart idea. As I said don’t be fooled into looking at the Dow as your economic barometer. That’s for the lazy, the amateurs, the armchair partisan economists.
