On the contrary, it's brainless to surrender liberty on the hope that it will REDUCE crime.
Remember, governments are instituted to help SECURE rights.
Securing rights by prosecuting injury AFTER THE FACT is fine. One can evaluate how good or bad government performs.
But PROSCRIBING behavior that MAY cause an injury is not fine. One can never prove how effective such loss of liberty was in preventing injuries.
If your silly premise was true, there would not be any stop signs, stop lights or speed limits. We all would be able to freely buy bombs at Walmart. We would all be legally allowed to shoot our guns in the air on New Year's Eve.
The assumption here is background checks will stop people from doing something crazy. Sorry, but background checks won't. They won't do anything to stop someone who is crazy enough to kill a bunch of innocent people from carrying out the act. It just doesn't work that way. Background checks seem like the easy solution, but anyone who believes that these things can actually stop the next attack is kidding themselves. Even the sponsors of the failed background check bill of a couple weeks ago admitted that background checks won't prevent the next tragedy.
Why don't we then just sell guns and ammunition at gas stations and truck stops without any identification required?
How many kids can an escaped mental patient kill with a steak knife? How many kids can a man kill with an AR-15? We already have real-world examples of this totalling "0" and "26", respectively.
Besides, how can he steal a gun if all you gun nuts are so damn responsible with them? They're locked up, right? RIGHT?
