A lot of the people who defend their Second Amendment rights cite the idea that our forefathers had given this right to us as a means of protecting our free society against government tyranny. Let me be quite clear, this thread is NOT intended to discuss guns or the notion of fighting off government turned tyrannical.

When people bring this up, they are usually scoffed and laughed at, but most baffling to me, is the fact that a great many seem to believe that government tyranny isn't even in the realm of possibility. Have we become so naive as a society to believe that our freedom isn't something that is in constant jeopardy, not more than one generation away from being stolen, to paraphrase Reagan? Have we become so comfortable in our busy lives that we have forgotten the Holocaust, or the struggles and oppression that the black community suffered right here in our own country within the last 100 years? Or maybe we ignore the fact that after Pearl Harbor, good, hard working Japanese citizens were rounded up and placed in camps..... Maybe we conveniently side step the fact that radicalism is growing ever so prevalent throughout the world in every shape and stride. Perhaos we just ignore the fact that government is growing larger and larger with every passing day with it's passing of regulation after regulation, some skating on the very thin ice of being unconstitutional and intrusive to the average citizen. Maybe some are blinded to the fact that we are being asked...check that.... we are being demanded to give up personal freedom and dignity all in the name of safety with laws like the "patriot" act or agencies like the TSA? Maybe we just discount the fact that we have countless examples throughout history of government that has turned it's back on freedom.

Now, you can go on ahead and call me a conspricy theory nut job, I'm sure there will be some of you who do. You can do that, or you can think about the question and gove a sincere answer. When did people stop being skeptical and scrutinizing of government? Why are so many convinced that freedom is gauranteed?

Those who doubt such things and that our government would never resort to tyranny need to open a book.

A real history book for starters. Not revisionist history.

There are plenty of countries that have gun control more strict than the US and their government is not a tyranny. By the way Reagan (OP's quote) was a supporter of stronger gun control laws.

That view is 100% wrong. The Constitution is very clear that change in government is to be handled democratically through elections and if officers commit high crimes or misdemeanors, through impeachment. It also is clear that anyone rising up against the nation is guilty of treason.

The Constitution does not sanction overturning a democratically elected government via violence or threat of violence.

So you are worried the government is going to use the military on its own people?

Right, but the government itself doesn't always handle this through democratic elections, either. The civil war is a good example of that. the southern states wanted to LEGALLY secede from the union they CONSENTED to join, and the federal government refused, invaded, and slaughtered them.

Obama has already killed a us citizen with a drone and without a trial, so it has come to pass.
