My other point is that one can easily construct a fact pattern that justifies monitoring reporters to catch a govt leaker of national security matters. The Patriot Act gives the govt the means to do it.
In which case you would monitor the phone calls of government employee's not reporters.

That was my thinking. If the leak is coming from your own organization and you know who knew the information then you'd go after the leaker, one of your own employees.

Yet I have not seen any news about how many government phone records the DOJ went after.

I actually had some idiot arguing with me while at the VA this morning. He kept insisting that the Justice Dept was tapping the phones of the AP and who they were calling. I tried to explain that was not true, but he said FOX and Drudge said so .... Wow! How does one argue with that? But, as some of you may not be surprised, I did.

George Orwell says hi.

Just tell our government that 1984 wasn't supposed to be an instruction manual.

Default Did the DOJ find the source of the leak?

After all this time (just over a year now), did the DOJ find the source of the leak about the bomb plot in Yemen? I have not seen a news story that says they did.

I would guess that the number of people with the CIA and other intelligence teams that knew about the bomb plot is relatively small. It seems hard to believe that the DOJ couldn't find the leak without looking at AP reporter phone records.

I'd wager that they never even thought to look through government phone records even though the source of the leak would have come from the government.

Of course not. I wonder why they didn't investigate the series of leaks of national security information last year.
