Every one of you have a grandma or an uncle or a parent who’s told you that at some point in life, as an African American, you have to work twice as hard as anyone else if you want to get by. I think President Mays put it even better: He said, “Whatever you do, strive to do it so well that no man living and no man dead, and no man yet to be born can do it any better.”
Isn't it amazing how different these mined quotes look in context? I bet he's 100% right, most young blacks most likely DID have grandparents or older relatives tell them that.
Good grief, is there anything that this president can ever say or do that won't send the right wing falling to their fainting couches, clutching their pearls and calling for their smelling salts? (That's a rhetorical question--this board provides answer enough.)
paranoid much. What do you want, people to bow at your feet. Not going to happen. Put your big boy pants on and face life like everyone else.
A real man does not suck off the government teet.
Wow.
First of all...I'm female.
Second of all...I've never used any government benefits of any kind. Ever. I work for a living and do quite well for myself, thank you very much.
Third...as a white person, I am rarely discriminated against in the same kind of overt way that black people are discriminated against. I've had to deal with sexism, but I wouldn't dare compare my experience as a white female to the black experience in America.

Thanks for the context. Makes more sense when put that way.
If you are 1/4 black working three times as hard as an oriental do you wind up working twice as hard as a transsexual aborigine, lol?
I get a kick out of all the generalizations due to color. I'm sure the Obama girls with their life of privilege will do better than most people regardless of color.
I think it's realistic and true, unfortunately. There is still a lot of institutionalized and silent racism in this country. It used to be socially acceptable for people to be openly racist. It no longer is, but racist people haven't stopped being racist. They just find other ways to be racist.

Great way to paraphrase exactly what the president was saying.
So, what was the issue again?
Edited to add: great commentary on this from Andrew Sullivan. Guess I shouldn't be surprised that the focus on racism is coming from Drudge:
"Drudge yesterday cherry-picked only those parts of the speech that could divide people racially, only those moments when Obama dared to recognize the discrimination and difficulties of young black men – before urging them to overcome them. There’s a racial nastiness here that decent voters still hear and that Republicans have deployed constantly. "
It's not universal. For some things they have to work harder, but for others it is not the case.
examples:
Some colleges/universities seek to fill a certain number of acceptances with minorities--in particular with black and Hispanics.
Certain scholarships give preference points to blacks and Hispanics. I used to be on a scholarship committee years ago where all the applicants competed for points, and then the top applicants were selected. Blacks and Hispanics were given an automatic 10 points to boost diversity.
Years back when in the military, some of the top promotional spots in our advancement process were reserved for blacks and Hispanics--such that they would be promoted to higher rank faster and more likely to be retained; and reflect higher diversity.
