Because it's delicious, nutritious, and a long work week doesn't feel quite complete without several refreshing pints on a Friday night at your local bar, pub, or club. I would stay away from cheap American pisswater pale lagers, however. Stick to craft brews or Belgian/German/English ales.
(Also, keep alcohol away from red state conservatives, who tend to be irresponsible with drugs, alcohol, and firearms. Dick Cheney and Dumbya Bush = 4 DUI arrests between them. Dick Cheney shot his friend in the face! It's little wonder why half the counties in deep red states prohibit the sale of alcohol)
Why does the government let people use it for recreational, medical, and industrial purposes?
Because the government realized the absurdity of making it illegal and the futility/waste of having a bureaucracy employed for the purpose of pursuing, prosecuting, and imprisoning 'offenders'.
Because it's been around so long, everyone thinks it's good, acceptable, and desirable by default. This is a logical fallacy known as appeal to tradition. In reality, it causes a tremendous amount of personal and social strife, far more than illegal drugs like marijuana ever have, can, or will. Ever. The hypocrisy involved is almost exquisite.
That being said, it does feel good to use and I don't believe most people intend to abuse it. And of course it should remain legal. Just look at what happened during prohibition!
The Cullen-Harrison Act, signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on March 22, 1933, authorized the sale of 3.2% beer (thought to be too low an alcohol concentration to be intoxicating) and wine, with the first legal beer sales since the beginning of Prohibition on January 16, 1920. In 1933, the state conventions ratified the Twenty-first Amendment, which repealed the 18th Amendment. The amendment was fully ratified on December 5, 1933. Federal laws enforcing Prohibition were then repealed.
You can prohibit man's vices, but, just as the war on drugs has proven, anything prohibiting people from consuming or using the vices would be a failure.

A speakeasy, also called a blind pig or blind tiger, is an establishment that illegally sells alcoholic beverages that came into prominence in the United States during the Prohibition era (1920–1933, longer in some states). During that time, the sale, manufacture, and transportation (bootlegging) of alcoholic beverages was illegal throughout the United States. Speakeasies largely disappeared after Prohibition was lifted in 1933.
If taking small doses of a deadly poison created a sense of well being and that toxin had been around for a thousand years- and used by humans traditionally it would be considered normal. I mentioned to an older woman who enjoyed large amounts of alcohol all of her life ..that alcohol was a poisonous substance and the high was actually a mild poisoning...She was offended and disagreed..Then I mentioned to her that she was intoxicated. I said booze was a toxin - that it was toxic- and she was intoxicated.
If alcohol was suddenly to appear for the first time as a new designer drug - It would be banned and not allowed on the market because of the serious side effects. It would be illegal...and classed as a poison.

Why say that? We're all slowly committing suicide. Alcohol is a good way of temporarily forgetting that fact. Don't be a buzzkill.
