I've read that those crappy plastic guns can fire only a handful of shots before failing. I really don't think they are going to be revolution in gun rights some think they will be. Though maybe it will make it easier for the next terrorist to get one on a plane and send another jet into a building. Joy.

Also, should look into the illegal firearms manufacturers in the Phillipines. There is so much demand from the criminals, that an extensive network of in-home/backyard production has sprung up. They make really nice guns that can be argued to be on par with the mass produced guns from famous manufacturers. The guns are copied designs and take about a week to make, and cost about 1/10th what they do in the US. So it isn't much of a stretch to imagine drug lords and gang neighborhoods in the US turning to similar processes....the criminals will continue to get them.

That's just a materials issue, already there are 3d printers that can print titanium, it won't be that long until people are able to print guns capable of firing thousands of rounds. China is already printing titanium parts for fighter planes. 3ders.org - China shows off world largest 3D printed titanium fighter component | 3D Printer & 3D Printing News

In this latest case they are printing a modified lower receiver, it will probably hold up to hundreds if not thousands of rounds since the stress will be contained by the steel upper that can be purchased through the mail - just like you could do with entire guns before the gun control act of 1968.
