I never said I sympathized with the mullahs, but we played a rule in increasing their popular support.
Their "popular support" is an example of collective mental illness. It's analogous to Televangelists taking over America and making gay people wear rainbow badges and forcing libraries to burn every book except the Left Behind series, and making Trinity Broadcasting the only network on tv.
You might feel differently if you grew up in deep poverty and oppression under a US-supported secular dictator. People tend to pick the side that they see as being concerned about their interests. They weren't "nuts" back in the 50's. What happened between then and the "Islamic Revolution?"
Not really. If the entire population of the country was in the demonstrations it might be scary.
But America is so hated by Iran and the lovely Mr. Ahmadinejad. And how do we forget his declaration that Israel must be destroyed? And how, exactly, Israel would be "eliminated by one storm." He said if America did anything in Iran.... ~ Now, I know this demonstration is supposedly a celebration, but I think it's just a show of what is to come. As they race full-speed ahead to get nuclear weapons they make it clear that if there is any trouble, the Jews will be the first to suffer. And how do we forget that Hitler was only slightly more direct when he announced seven months before invading Poland that if there was another war the result would be the annihilation of the Jews in Europe. Maybe I'm mixing up the demonstrations with the disdain for America, but overall I think their threat is HUGE.

People who think that their interests include stoning women for wearing slacks and waiting for the 12th Mahdi to appear so that half the world can be incinerated are nuts.
People who forget that Iran's oil wealth is largely the result of Western exploration and technology are suffering from selective amnesia.
People who blame America for their own backwardness and acquiescence to the whims of madmen are intellectually immature.

Ahmadinejad isn't the most powerful person in Iran... "Supreme Leader" Khomeini is, who happens to use far more measured rhetoric and fewer threats. Amadenijad is highly unpopular and should be out of office long before Iran has any chance of being capable of producing nuclear weapons. The Iranian leaders likely aren't suicidal and I doubt they would use nuclear weapons on anyone, even if they had them, for fear of being annihalated themselves. Anyways, that's a problem that has many years to be addressed, as the best estimates are that Iran won't be near having nuclear weapons capability for the next 5-10 years.
And... I don't think the Iranian people all hate America. There were large candlelight vigils in Tehran after 9/11. We've squandered some of that goodwill and are likely far less popular there now than we were back in 2001.

Two big differences here:
#1: unlike Hitler's Germany in 1938; Iran is essentially a third rate country, take away China and Russia-----Iran would be essentially helpless if fighting a disciplined First World military force.
#2: compared to the 'pacifist' unarmed Jews of 1938: Israel will at the very least would severely injure Iran.
I'd say it's partly government sponsored protesting/celebration similar to what the nazi's did.
Not everyone is against the US in Iran, and not everyone is for Ahmajinadad (holy crap, I was really close to spelling that right first try, instead of the H I had a D instead.. crazy) despite what the bush administration tries to promote.
You have to realize that the US media is more or less a propaganda tool.

Yeah, but for our enemies instead of for us.
