If you lived in a culture dominated by 10% violent "wackaloons" that could not be controlled by either religious or secular law would you have the courage to publically protest?
Exactly and well put. Remember that 12 year old girl who was shot in the head by the Taliban on her school bus because she wanted to take books to school? Would you publicly protest in Pakistan if you had children?
It's still condoned by their religious leaders.
Islam is still centuries behind the other religions of the world.
I am not giving these people a pass (see more below) but in fact Islam is, literally, chronologically 500 or so years behind the other religions of the world. It's 500 years younger than Christianity.
500 years ago real atrocities were still being committed globally in the name of Christianity.
Moreover, this is more a product of extremist, fundamentalist, overzealous fringe freaks. They can be a part of any religion (or none.)
That said, the Taliban in particular are clearly vile, evil, bent-on-death-and-destruction fear- and hate-mongers who should be killed on sight.
They are not loons. They're devout Muslims carrying out jihad against non-believers as their religion instructs.
The vast majority of Muslims are reasonable, kind, peaceful people.
Suicide bombers and human excrement like the Taliban are not indicative of Islam as a whole any more than Westboro or the KKK are indicative of Christianity.

Westboro are fake Christians, and they do not kill or hurt anyone.

Who are you to judge who's a "fake Christian?" They clearly consider themselves a Christian organization--a Baptist Church, in fact.
Just because what they practice doesn't comport with your personal opinion of what Christianity is doesn't mean a thing. We have hundreds of Christian organizations and churches who don't agree with each other.
Besides, there are plenty of recent examples of people killing in the name of Christianity, including the Troubles in Ireland from recent times, the assassination of doctors who perform abortions, etc.
Any religion can engender violence, hatred and lunacy.
