On SS, cat food is all that you would be eating.
SS, was meant to supplement the lower incomes the old people made, as they were slower at doing tasks, and being able to work 10-14 hours a day. It was never meant to be a livable supplement.

There were many, many other ways to protect your retirement without the government taking control of it.

Why do you want someone else handling YOUR money.....handing it out to you as a parent would hand a child an allowance?
Not stupidity:
the lack of wherewithal, the lack of ability, and procrastination are some, but not all, of the reasons people don't save.
I have advocated for a long time for an account based retirement system with government matching funds as an incentive. However, I'm afraid people would not save even with a match, and would be destitute when they can't work anymore. Savings for retirement would have to be made mandatory, I would imagine, to avoid that situation.

You do know there are some great books that tell the history of our elderly before social security when there were no retirement plans and you basically accepted a life of deep poverty when you finally stopped working.

Presided over one of the largest economic expansions in world history and unemployment hovered around 2%.
Kept us out of unnecessary foreign wars.

Because he kept government as small as possible and things got better he is ignored. Can't let anyone think they can take care of themselves. Means less power in D.C. lols.
