Other cities/mayors will be watching Detroit's emergence from bankruptcy like a hawk, with fingers crossed, hoping they do emerge from it smelling like a rose!

Then? Monkey-see-monkey-do!!!

And who will be the next monkey?

Wait a minute. Didn't Montreal file for bankruptcy after they hosted the Olympics? The city turned out fine.

It is very possible for Detroit to be saved from their current mess. Granted, a lot of work will need to be done. They can always have other things their economy can become dependent upon besides what they previously had. Perhaps someone can invent something and make his/her home base there. Or a new automaker might emerge and they could set up shop. Detroit and the rest of Michigan can make a stab at rebounding, and I'd like to see it happen. But they'll have to change politically, both in the city and in the state. Lower taxes and less government will bring jobs, people, and stability back to that once-great city. Given the chance, conservatism can work.

My nephew is moving there, so behave yourself. Your guns are making your brain a little crazy. Is it the gunpowder or whatever it is bullets have inside them these days?

Lower taxes, less government is no panacea for creating jobs, courting corporate relocations. Las Vegas/the state of Nevada proves that!

Nevada has always had an ideal business climate, along with no state income tax, and try hard as they may, they still can't get businesses to move here and create jobs!

What are they doing wrong?

They spend all this money on advertising campaigns to lure over-taxed businesses from California, and where are they? Why aren't they leaving?

Perhaps they don't want to move to a state ruled by a handful of oligarchs?

Well Detroit tried high taxes and more government. How'd that work out?

Actually this is a good time for urban planning from the start, cheap real estate and no where to go but up. It's going to take decades but actually a good opportunity.

Don't usually answer myself but...

It ended up with less government, lower tax revenues, poor services, higher crime and ultimately bankruptcy protection.

Agreed tho not all of Detroit is a mess. But: and tho I DON'T like the idea of tearing down old buildings that were really nice 50 years ago and are still Ok in 2013, it may come to that to save other, more solid "hoods".

The word I think is "triage"
