In a union friendly city? Good luck with that , illegal immigrants!

You do realize that a unionized workforce all but guarantees that illegal immigrants won't be getting those jobs, don't you?

The stadium will be used to house people as was done in NO after the flood. Who has the coin to pay admission?

Stunning to think an ice hockey would be part of a solution to the desperate condition of Detroit. Perhaps it makes sense if a city is in financial trouble but not when taps has already sounded and evryone walked away from the grave.

As for long term benefit of a hockey areana built in the desert of Detroit, this is typical current administration strategy of building high spped rail to nowhere and advocating other high end facilities and projects that do absolutely nothing to solve the immediate problem. Again, if a city is still solvent but in need of help some of these ideas may have merit.

Snake oil salesman and used car dealers have nothing on the group that is pushing a hockey stadium in Detroit.

Detroit has multiple sports arenas in sports that are much more popular than Hockey. It's ridiculous.

As for the "jobs created" the construction and everything affiliated with it will be done by companies that already have most of the people working already. This whole "jobs creation" selling point is nonsense.

The $350M flowing into Detroit at some point will be reversed as the bond money is paid back. Net effect is actually negative due to interest payments.

The point about the jobs is a good point, but its temporary jobs.. $444M will get a lot of perminant jobs if invested properly.

$400M / 2000 jobs = $200,000 per job.

Of course no one should believe this generates that many ongoing jobs. The actual long term contribution to jobs will be much less. How many full time staff work a sports arena? 100? 200? The people selling beer and popcorn are temps.

You can easily grow the $350 million before you need to pay it back. The net effect will absolutely not be negative. What revenue muni do you know of that has ever had a negative net effect?

Do you know anything about downtown Detroit? Comerica Park (Tigers), Ford Field (Lions) are built near each other and along with the nearby restaurants/fox theater are about the only things bringing outsiders into the city to spend money. Moving what is one of the wealthiest hockey franchises (which always sells out) from the dumpy arena by the riverfront with nothing around it, and bringing it to the same downtown area with the other stadiums will only further strengthen the entertainment district. What they are doing is consolidating the entertainment district... which will hopefully lead to expansion.

Consolidation is exactly what the entire city should be doing. The infrastructure of Detroit is built for 1.5 million plus resident... they have half of that, which means they don't have the money to support the infrastructure. You want to reduce response times for police and fire? Consolidate the residents. You want to reduce school transportation and utility fees? Consolidate the residents.
