Most black people don't know where they came from in Africa. Slavery erased their histories. So it's kind of difficult to go off of anything besides "black'
A black student on a visa from Kenya would be elligible to join the Black Student Union but not the African American Student Union.
I would also hope that a mixed-race student would be invited to join both the Black Student Union and the White Student Union.
Ethnicity based student unions are open to anyone who wants to join and has an interest in the culture of that group. It's like joining the French club in high school.
So the majority and the establishment need to have special clubs to feel...special. Ok, fine. It gets headlines because everyone knows what the reasoning is. The guys gets his 15min, his tiny club of racists gets ignored and the world moves on.

I understand why you think it seems hypocritical at first, but try to look beyond the face value. Black people are a minority in this country. When a black student goes to college for the first time, he/she can feel really isolated if there is no one that looks like him/her. Black student unions are simply a way to identify others of similar backgrounds and create an organization around that.
White people have traditionally also joined such groups in the form of Italian American, Polish American, German American, etc. groups. The thing is, many white people can identify what part of Europe their ancestry came from. Blacks cannot do this. So over the course of time (mostly during slavery) blacks from different ethnic/tribal origins got lumped into one category-black.
Furthermore, black student unions aren't discriminatory (if they are the college should shut them down) and welcome any members.
I think this is why left wing liberals, as you put it, feel that the idea of a "white" student union really makes no sense. It's just not needed.

Irrelevant in the modern context. It is not the fault of modern Whites that Blacks cannot identify with a specific African "tribe" because of an institution of slavery that was outlawed 150 years ago. No student at Georgia State University ever owned slaves, or was a slave. Your argument is fallacious.

Neither is the White Club at Georgia State University according to its founder -- anyone can join. Did you bother reading any news articles about this, or just reflexively respond with an emotionally knee-jerk Left-Wing response?

So you're in favor of a double standard ? A black President , a black Attorney General , a black Supreme Court Justice , and on and on . Looking at the demographics of the population , one could argue that blacks are over represented in the power department .
