Texas Sen. Ted Cruz wishes there were ‘100 more’ people like the late Helms in today’s Senate. Is he kidding?!

When then-Senator Trent Lott praised Strom Thurmond and his segregationist campaign for president in 1948—"We voted for him. We're proud of it."—it all but cost him his career. In a sane world, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz would also be on the political ropes, in his case, for cheering the late Jesse Helms of North Carolina, an unreconstructed bigot who devoted his life to the defense of white supremacy and the advancement of far-right politics. Instead, Cruz—who in many ways is the ideological successor to Helms—will lose nothing, and continue to act as the avatar for forces that will destroy the Republican Party if they aren't stopped.

Actually Mr. Cruz, we need 100 more like you and bye bye Republican Party. That's some good rebranding of the party that you've got goin' on there...

The classic liberal Tea Party is hijacking the GOP away from the statists and bible thumpers. Ted Cruz is one leading the charge.

The Democrats are massively scared of this. Freedom is a more popular agenda than the Democrat's fascist one.

Cruz is leading the charge to shut down the government if the president refuses to defund the ACA. So in answer to your question, his goal may not be to take the party down, but that will be the outcome.

Ted Cruz and Rand Paul each want to be President of the United States. They both try as hard as possible to get their names/faces in the news to increase their name recognition.

Actually, it's the Republicans who are scared of this because it's dividing their party. A divided party will most certainly lose.

The ACA has destroyed the 40 hour work week, is ruining the economy, and ruining healthcare while jacking up the costs.

Everyone should be in favor of dumping the worst thing the US has done since slavery. The ACA is an abomination. Unions are even in favor of repealing that massively destructive legislation the Democrats passed late at night, without reading the bill and without a single GOP vote.

That's nothing. You should hear how Democrats praised Sen. Robert Byrd, a former Kleagle (I guess that's a leader) of the Ku Klux Klan, at his funeral in 2010. Remember Bill Clinton excusing his membership because he was just a good ol' country boy who was trying to get elected?

Now I can see someone joining and attending Klan rallies if they want to get elected, but rising all the way to a leadership position? I bet you have to be virulently racist to achieve that.

The party tried to unite behind statists the last two elections and failed. Trying to rally around a religious wacko would fracture the party beyond repair. The Tea Party represents the biggest chunk of the three GOP base units, by far.

Ted Cruz can't be President. He was born in Canada.
