I am all for religious freedom in this country and the separation of church and state, but this seems like an attempt to use our love of religious freedom against us.
I thought of this in another way -
If there were 'rogue' groups of Libertarians killing socialists I would have no problem with police infiltrating the Libertarian movement.
This is a common activity of police in its need to protect citizens from harm. Any organization is subject to this, and I'm glad that they do it.
Catholic priests, in their law breaking, have probably caused a similar response and they were not pledged to kill as many civilians as possible.
Muslims should understand that this is not prosecution of them, it is one of the ways in which a civilized society protects itself.
Spying on a select group of people based on their religion is the exact same thing as spying on a group of people based on their race.
It's unconstitutional and no matter what we may think of their religious practices, they have constitutional rights just like us. I mean how would we like it if the police started spying on us because we're NOT Muslim or of Middle Eastern decent?
Sorry, but the NYPD is wrong on this unless they have valid justification for doing so.
If the NYPD has reason to believe that there are groups of terrorists that stem from a certain race or religion then they should definitely be concentrating their resources in that group. We agree. I don't like it, but there is one group that is known for terrorist activities the world over. They have planted bombs, upset trains, flown planes into building, killed and persecuted other races and religions - the world over. I think if the NYPD knows of this they should concentrate investigative efforts in that group and that group should not be hiding behind the claim of religious or racial persecution.
The cops go where the crimes are. It's just that simple.
If they have hurt innocent people, then let those people file claims, but do not allow the guilty to hide behind the skirts of the innocent.

This is one of those instances where the question, "Do we hurt the innocent to punish the guilty?" comes into play. I mean, don't get me wrong I want the bad guys to be caught and put away, but at cost are we willing to go?
If we go too far then we are no better than those we seek. If we stay away then we're looked at as cowards and people afraid to seek justice. A conundrum quite indeed.

Certainly, if the innocent were hurt, it is one thing. If people covered up, sheltered, protected, or joined in conversations of violent people, then it's an entirely different story. This is what, hopefully, the courts will discern. We don't know the entire story and I'm sure that a lot of surveillance activities cannot be divulged to the public.
