"There was, of course, no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system, The Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate, they could plug in your wire whenever they wanted to. You had to live – did live, from habit that became instinct – in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every move was scrutinized."
How eerily accurate was he? Today, the NSA is doing exactly what Orwell wrote about in 1948. He obviously didn't have a clue about the technology, but he did know human nature and he foresaw the growth of our Big Government Nanny State.

All he had to do was to look at that raving Psycho, J Edgar Hoover, and extrapolate out a few years.
What is it with you guys and your "if you don't have any solutions to offer, then keep your mouth shut" mentality?
Is not a warning about dire events worthy of being spoken?
I'm getting really, really sick of that crap. And you're flinging it at someone who wrote a book in 1948!! Geez, is there any line you guys won't cross to make political hay???

I'm getring tired of people merely complaining about the NSA...
It's time to bring in some fresh talent that can solve this.

Yep.
Back in 1948 a government had to spy on its citizens the old-fashioned way.
All he had to do was to look at that raving Psycho, J Edgar Hoover, and extrapolate out a few years.
interesting tidbit of fact...orwell, real name eric adair, was a student of aldous huxley (author of brave new world) while he attended eton......i think the seeds of his vision of the world were planted way before hoover came on the seen
He didn't have solutions.....that I recall. He just did a great job of predicting the future.
