"Both mayoral candidates, radical progressive Bill de Blasio, and Republican candidate, Joe Lhota, support the idea. In a most bitter irony, the city that witnessed the fall of the Twin Towers on 9/11 will be largest school district to close for Islamic holidays. CAIR/Hamas will see that it happens, as will the Arab American Anti-Discrimination Committee. But it appears they've already won.

So what is the school's policy. I think it depends on that. In my state and especially my county we have a large Jewish population so the schools are closed on their religious days. This was decided decades ago. The policy here is that if a certain percentage of kids and staff are absent then there is no point in having schools open. I know the Muslim population here has been trying to establish a holiday for their religious days but the numbers don't warrant it and therefore won't happen. Candidates can support it all they want but they have no control over it.
Schools can be closed whenever they want for whatever reasons they want IMO. What would be the problem if a day off for "insert whatever I don't agree with here"? It's scheduling, nothing more. Some people seem to think the school calendar needs to validate their religious beliefs or national pride, but that's just arguing about nothing.
In 2002 my daughters college changed their spring break so it would take place during St Patricks Day because of excess partying that occurred. They figured with fewer kids in town during that time there would be less drunken debauchery. The result was that now it's probably the only college in the country that has turned Cesar Chavaz day, which occurs after they get back, into a drinking holiday. You can't win!
Can't say I like this, but for very in-PC reasons.
What surprised me is that 15% of the schools district is Muslim. I'll keep my comments to myself, but I live in nyc and am getting to the part of life where children are on the near horizon....when I'm thinking of where to raise my family, this would certainly have an impact
the source for the story is an extremist tea party website.
won't believe it till it's reported in a legitimate news source
