It's OK. Darwin was not able to explain the holes in his theory either.

I don't' think he used it as an excuse to call people stupid though.

Sorry but you've gotten the Piltdown Hoax perpetuated by Charles Dawson and the finds in Java by Eugène Dubois and replicated by subsequent archeologist. By the way, Dawson was not a scientist and the hoax was exposed by.... evolutionary archeologist, scientist for short.
