Didn't a woman die in Los Angeles recently, in the waiting room of an ER ward, because she waited so long for care that she went into shock and had a fatal heart attack?

But WHY would people WANT to pay for private healthcare, what would be the point as you get the best care subsidised from the government?

I guess it must only be in the UK national health service where people die waiting for care....

I am sure people die all the tme, point is if it happens under a NHS what is the point in having it?
And again,Australia is an industrialised nation with a national health system and life expectancy is lower there....

Oddly enough Puerto Rico has a higher life expectancy than the USA....do THEY have free healthcare?

Why was she waiting so long?

How would this have been averted if there was a national health system in place?

If you make over a certain wage, some people want private insurance because it will be cheaper because you are charged a PERCENTAGE of your wages. But a much larger percentage keep their regular insurance. If you have private insurance, your premiums rise a lot when you get older, no surprise. After all they want to make a PROFIT on you.

People in the US most likely have a lower life expectancy because they eat mostly junk, don't exercise and are stressed. Pretty much everyone agrees something needs to be done to the current system, so I wish they would get a panel of independent experts, not health insurance company people, look at all the available options and devise one, that would work best for this country.
Fat chance of that happening....

Ahh,I think you have hit upon why some people LOVE the idea of a NHS...the 'rich' get to pay for it.

Obesity is a problem in EVERY industrialised nation, not just here.

Although there sure do seem to be a lot of fat people here.

My problem is that people think the gov't is well suited to providing healthcare when to be honest it isn't very good at providing anything at a decent cost(remember while you might not be paying when you are at the hospital, you are paying in the end)

If I remember correctly, there was a scandal regarding VA healthcare, that is government run....

Hmmm.

Perhaps a better idea would be to find out WHY medical care is so expensive, what is the root cause.

Urban ER wards in the US are a crowded mess. If you show up with a 'minor' compliant, a series of stabbing and gunshot victims will show up and get priority treatment. Waits of 8 hours are not unusual. If you are bad at assessing your own situation, you might be in real trouble.

Easy to figure out... the number one reason why these companies are in business is profits. And the system is totally unefficient. Doctor's offices have to deal with hundreds of different forms and rules for all the various insurance companies, taking more time which is passed on to the patients. Skyrocketing malpractice insurance premiums are another factor.
