Are food, clothing and shelter rights? How about clean air, purified water, education and transportation? What should be the system for determining whether or not something is a right?

If something is a necessity for life it is a right; as in "Life, Liberty and Pursuit of happiness."

At one point a "home" was considered "a right" so millions of people were practically handed mortgages to go buy the home of their dream.

We all know how that turned out.

Seems everyone wants their "rights" but at someone else's expense.

Nope. Its your right to be able to pursue food, shelter and clothing without anyone preventing you from that, but it's not your right to have them handed to you. The others aren't a right either. They may be in the country's best interest, but it's not a right.

I think the op's point is, since food, clothing and shelter are not rights, how can healthcare, which exists below these needs on a chart of whats needed to substain life, be considered one.
