A used prefab house is pretty cheap. So are used tractors

Based on the fact that you have enough time to post here and you have a smart phone with web access which allows you to post here from anywhere in the world, you don't need anyone to give you anything.
Besides the farm, there is also that bit of building a house from scratch.
And if you are familiar with early America, shared chores between neighbors and family was common.
Barn raising as an example. Neighbors all pitched in because everyone would need help eventually and helping a neighbor put help points in the bank.
In colonial America taxes were levied an able body males were expected to help on road crews maintaining roads and highways in the community.
Those that didn't pitch in [libertarians] were not helped when they needed help.
True.. they were poor. And they were willing to risk everything they owned, and their own lives for that matter, to WORK their way out of that poverty. Nothing wrong with that. I fear that if we tried that today, all we'd get is folks crying that it wouldn't be fair that the house isn't already built for them, that it would be too hard for them to plant their own garden, and that there is no 50K job within walking distance and they couldn't afford the homeowners insurance... Like I said... Let's make a program for them.
It would be difficult for them to build the house, plant the garden and secure insurance.
Do you have any idea how many government permits and regulations are required to do those basic tasks? It's much easier (and profitable) to not do them at all.

Roads were privately owned until the 1860s. Except for the ones in D.C. One of Lincolns 3 main campaign themes was for government takeover of the roads. It is also one of the reasons the Southern States peacefully left the Union before Lincoln violently forced them back in.
The first paragraph is a perfect example of libertarianism. People helping each other because it is in everyone's best interest. not because the government is forcing them.
The homestead act of 1862 required people to actually work. People today are too lazy to benefit from such a program. They want you to just simply hand everything to them...

And why do you think that is? And this is not about politics since both the north and south have their fair share of the poor.

Free land is free land, and it was a massive redistribution of wealth from the Indians to the homsteaders.

Yes it was, but they still had to work for it, which today would be considered cruel...
