Didn't the majority of the vote go against mcauliff? Typical dem dirty tricks had an obama bundler bankroll the third party candidate to split the vote. Add those votes together and mcauliff got fewer votes. Not a blue state, just a dirty one thanks to dems and obama.
There is no evidence that Starvis's vote would have gone to Cuccinelli. Pretty much everything shows the Starvis's vote would have been split between Cuccinelli and McAuliffe if they even would have shown up (didn't like either one).

Unless Cuccinelli would've gotten 70+% of the Independent vote, it didn't decide the race.
Guess I am, I didn't realize Virginia was some liberal utopia.
No, but there has always been Democrat support in Virginia particularly in the rural areas of the state. Rick Boucher, a Democrat, was a 13 term Congressman up until 2010 in the 9th congressional district which covers the Southwest corner of the state aka the "backwoods, redneck area."
It's not a liberal utopia, heck, even Northern Virginia isn't a liberal utopia, it's far from liberal, though reliably Democrat.
For about 17 years of my life and I still think the best thing I ever did was move away from that craphole called Virginia. And yes Bayonne, NJ is pretty much a craphole. Brooklyn isn't bad, but has reached a point of being too expensive to live in. Personally I can't wait to move back to Oregon. The Northwest is the most beautiful part of this country.
Sorry you feel that way. Where in VA did you live? This is a very diverse state, both geographically and demographic.
Also agree with you on the Pacific NW. 2 years in the Puget Sound were the best years of my life.

I grew up in Virginia Beach, though I have visited just about every inch of that state growing up there. I was in the Northwest for the past 10 years before moving to the NYC area and have since learned leaving the Northwest was a big mistake, so my wife and I will be moving back to where we belong.
No offense to you, but besides the history of Virginia I have never had anything good to say about that state.
Good thread.. depends on how you define 'blue'. If you mean a state led by a Democrat governor, then in modern history, Virginia is a purple state. The governorship has consistently gone back & forth between Ds & Rs for about 50 years. Going back even further, it's Democrat all the way (minus Reconstruction). But.. those Democrats were conservative (often Dixiecrat type), not the modern brand of cultural-Marxist Democrats.
If you're definition of 'blue' is more cultural, than party label.. like % of evangelical Christians, views on race relations, support for military, etc. I would say Virginia is consistently more red than blue, w/the exception of NoVa which is getting deeply blue. Even the other blue areas of Va, like Norfolk are generally culturally conservative, but vote Democrat bcuz of large Black populations that are loyal to the party.. but aren't blue 'progressives' like NoVa. peace.
