Watching a documentary about poverty in Australia on youtube, and one big point they made that also rings very true here is the serious lack of welfare support for single people without children. We always complain about so-called welfare queens pushing babies out so they can get more money. Well, if "breeding poverty" is such a serious problem, then why can't we make it less attractive for the poor to have as many kids as possible? For example, I looked into Medicaid eligibility in my state, and you can't get it unless you are disabled or have kids. Singles without children need not apply.

When it comes to public housing, families with children are given priority to homeless or soon-to-be-homeless single people. The result is young poor men are ripe to commit crimes from petty theft to drug selling to get by. Young, poor women have more and more children out of wedlock in order for them to get benefits they otherwise would not get without children. Seems like to me that the welfare system needs to stop creating an environment that encourages births from people who can't afford more than one in the first place.

I have to stress again, is it any wonder why young, poor men commit crimes and young, poor women have multiple births out of wedlock? It doesn't surprise me, especially since most benefits in the US are only accessible if you have kids. This system works for the family that had a husband that worked at the local car assembly line and was laid off, but this system is dysfunctional and discouraging for those starting out life. The benefits don't need to be adjusted, but the priorities need to be shifted around, in my opinion.

What we really need is for the work ethic to come back.

We need far less people on welfare handouts, not more.

You can never have 0% unemployment, unless you are willing to go full-on socialist with the economy. There will always, ALWAYS, be people unemployed. Keep on topic, please, instead of with the usual talking points.

Let's get the other talking points out of the way that offer no realistic solutions to anything:

-Not everyone can be a contractor
-Not everyone can own their own business
-Not everyone can excel in the STEM fields

I know of one person who gets unemployment. The rest of the people I know work, work, work, don't get unemployment, work, don't get food stamps, would rather work than do that, work, work. So who are all the losers you know that sit around on their butts all day collecting unemployment, food stamps, have no interest in working, paying their way (because working would actually get them more money than being on the dole), blahblahblah.

Just more talking points, more stereotypes, zero substance

Physically able adults need to work and support themselves. The US has a generous welfare state and safety net that should be used as a hand up not a hand out

Agree. I also agree that those mentally disabled, seniors & vets should get off that ASAP.

Sure they can! Didn't you hear Romney's advice? "Just borrow the money from your parents to start a business."

The law has changed on Medicaid where single people below a certain point of the poverty level are elligible. So single people can live in mommas basement and have a 200 buck food card also. With that said what are solutions? They should be time framed such as the first year you are elligible but the second year they slash your food card 10% a month until 0. The second year Medicaid is cut to emergency only and ends before starting 3rd year.

As far as woman the gvt covers one child and she agrees to take the shot[ can't think of name] so she does not birth another child. I think the shot last 6 months and if the woman does not show up for scheduled follow shot/shots her benifits end. That solves the problem of birthing children and having the gvt paying for it. If the woman does not like the terms she is on her own and just maybe her family will help her.

I actually am in favor of women getting the depo shot in order to collect.
