We had a new rule in July that forced states to follow up on our unemployed work applications. Although it was required before July 1st of 2013; it was not as closely regulated. My feeling is that rule change prepared many for the end of the extensions. By the way, it is only the extensions that are coming to an end - people will still be eligible to receive benefits if they meet the requirements.
Of course some people will use this as and excuse to steal. Humans are human. That does not justify crime. I felt that our government already extended the benefits too long. If the unemployed knew that the benefits would only last a set time; they would not have the same reasons to use this as justification. I believe the problem's come from when government constantly extends the benefits and people come to expect it.
I (perhaps naively) assume law-abiding, honest folks will not steal no matter what, and low-life thieves will steal no matter what. Many years ago I was broke and hungry and almost homeless but the notion of stealing or shoplifting whatever I thought I needed was crazy.
Around here most people steal for drug and addiction-related problems. They're going after cash, cigarettes, cell phones and anything that can be traded for a rock. People stealing formula or Pampers or food is really not an issue, as reported in local news and according to a couple of cops I know. That is pretty much the truth.
poverty and crime have no correlation. asians and poor whites do not have sky rocket crime due to poverty. crime is created by culture for better or worse.
not to worry.
however if you have been feeding hungry bears and then you stop, worry plenty. you are going to need a bear gun.
Wasn't unemployment set at 26 weeks for years and years? And only just recently extended due to the high unemployment rate? It's being set back to 26 weeks because the unemployment rate isn't too high any more. So why would that cause crime?

When you're on the street and near starvation people will do what it takes to survive.
We're gonna need some kind of basic income system in the near future. If you guys think there will be as many jobs again like in the past you're dead wrong. Jobs are being outsourced/mechanized faster and faster. Of course by then this country will be third world status with the elites moving on to greener pastures.
When less people are working and thus having less money it stands to reason theft would increase. People will steal to survive and some will steal just to stay in their "comfort zone".
It's more likely that the unemployed will become employed.
