although I could never understand the mind of a criminal or what drives others to say stealing when they normally wouldn't, this recession seems to have brought out the best in Americans rather than the worst. Everybody from top to bottom seems to be hurting or knows someone that is. Perhaps we aren't the self centered arrogant jerks many cynics make us out to be?
I've been waiting for a lib to credit 0bama with a drop in the crime rate. I'm surprised that the 0bama admin has not already gone public to grab credit.
Don't forget our high incarceration rate. We have a lot of people in prisons now - all those rapists and murderers who would otherwise be repeat offenders are still locked up.
i kind of think crime might be down due to all the people that have been incarserated and taken off the streets in the last few years..we have the highest incarceration rate of any country ...but i dont see the problems changing that much

It seems to work the other way these days. Only negative news are linked to the admin, while positive news rarely are.
I have not read the report, but would be interesting to know what the real reason is. From what I have read the prisons are letting people out because of the cost of housing so many in prison.
Could it be that the recession is driving illegal immigrants back to where they came from?
