..and you thought Bloomberg was nuts...Thank God I don't live in NYC. Can't wait to read about more of what Bloomberg Jr. comes up with over the next 8 years (Oh yeah, the fools of NYC will re elect in him 4 years).
Soon horse-drawn carriages may well be a thing of the past in New York City. According to Bill deBlasio, mayor-elect, he has been outspoken about getting rid of Central Park’s horses and carriages. In comments during a news conference and as reported on CNN Dec. 30, deBlasio said that horses pulling carriages in urban settings is inhumane.
As much as I love how they look, he is correct to a point. From what I understand, the horses are not treated well. I hope I'm wrong.
I wish you were wrong, some of the things I have heard that happen to those horses over the years is very sad. The worst is when they die from heat exhaustion from being over worked in the summer.
The stables (between West 37th and 38th), are close to the entrance of the Lincoln tunnel, and are poised for redevelopment. With that the horses would be gone in any case. Many cities had horse drawn carriages for tourists but banned them following spooked horses and accidents. Horses and traffic don't mix. I'd like a solution that kept them in the park but banned them from city streets.

If there was a way to limit them being used only in Central Park and only during certain times of the year so that they aren't being used in extreme weather, nor overworked with long hours. They would need to build a stable building in Central Park.
Yeah sending them to the glue factory once their purpose is outlawed is so much more humane.
Where does it state that the horses will be killed if carriages are outlawed? Seeing as how this ban would serve to protect animals, I'm sure that a solution as to what to do with the horses would not involve euthanizing them. They may be turned over to the ASPCA and rehomed to a farm or horse owners may buy them. The only "purpose" they serve are to their owners that make money off of them.
