RealClearMarkets - Who Is Dropping Out Of The Labor Force, and Why?

-Worst Labor Force Participation Rate since 1978

-Labor Participation Rates are RISING for people 55 and older

-Labor Participation Rates are SHRINKING for people 16 to 54

-Since the recession began people aged 55 and older have seen their workforce increase by 4.8 Million workers

-Since the recession began people aged 16 to 54 have seen their workforce shrink by 6.8 Million

The workforce is shrinking from younger workers not finding jobs - not from older workers retiring.

Job growth is not keeping up with population growth.

Let's stop blaming the boomers.

There should be exit interviews for people exiting the workforce, then we would know everything about them we want to know.

"Boomers are retiring" and "Boomers are not retiring" is going to be good for the next 20 years.

Can't find a job..because the boomers aren't retiring.
Labor participation rate going down..the boomers are retiring.
Can only find min wage job..the boomers are hanging on to the good paying jobs and won't retire.

Let's stop blaming the boomers.

It doesn't matter, we'll still be blamed because:
We aren't tech savvy.
We didn't retire in our 40's.
We screwed the country by using up all the Social Security and Medicare (even though most of us aren't old enough to collect it yet).
And on and on and on.

Sigh. you really dont understand the math.

Yup, there are LESS JOBS. Thus a lower labor force participation

Quote:
-Labor Participation Rates are RISING for people 55 and older
IE people are retiring less.

Funny that-when you cant find work you stop looking after a while

You do know why they are called boomers right?

again...you do know what boomers are right?

Sigh. You DO understand that older workers not retiring means there arent any job openings for the younger generation right? RIGHT?

Why not exactly? They're part of the problem.

Actually growing wealth inequality mixed in with a change from pensions through workplaces to ineffective 401K plans that only exist for the people that can truly afford them, along with a depression....

Sigh.

With in 24 hours someone from the left will claim that the participation rate is falling because of boomers retiring. They have been showed charts, articles and stats on numerous occasions and ignore them because it goes against the parties talking points.

More people turn 25 every day than 55. The boomers are no longer the biggest generation.

I see a lot of self-righteous sighing in place of addressing the actual post. Don't be a prima donna.

You seem to agree with article at times, that it is the bad economy that continues...no real recovery...and it is false to say that labor participation rates are down from retiring boomers...

What problem ?
Boomers just hit retirement age in 2011.
A mere 2 years so you can't blame them.
Those over 67 today are Silent Generation and they are going back to work as well.
The height of the boomer births is 1957.
They won't be 66 for another 10 years.
And then you start the downward trend.
