Shouldn't they ask for and deserve more? If I'm making $15 an hour that means my labor is worth double the minimum. If the minimum is $15 I want $30.

What happens to the $12/hour EMS worker employed by the county (our county in fact had "help wanted" to this effect, under the proposed $15/hour minimum wage)? Can municipalities get an exemption? What about Detroit city workers? What happens when municipalities are broke and cannot afford to pay that kind of money for each worker? What should our county funded EMS worker get, since they have more experience that a fry cook?
Right now, a large percentage of low-wage workers are eligible for various kind of public assistance because their wages are so low. Why should the taxpayers subsidize businesses so they can keep wages low and reap bigger profits? If your businesses model requires that you pay your employees so little that they qualify for welfare, your businesses model needs to change. Will it be disruptive? You bet! But something needs to change.

It's a law on the books and what has happened is that wages are now compared against min wage.
