The Missoula County Attorney’s Office in Montana has “a general disregard” for sexual assault cases involving female victims; often treating the victims with disrespect, failing to communicate with them or law enforcement handling the case, and frequently declining to pursue charges against suspects even when there is enough damning evidence to proceed, a Department of Justice investigation found.

The DOJ says alleged sexual assault victims described their interactions with the Missoula County Attorney’s Office as “traumatic” and frustrating. Some said they felt as though they were treated with “no compassion,” that they felt “judged,” that the prosecutors acted like they were “forced to speak with them,” or that the prosecutors did not believe them.

Well, it certainly does sound like very little, if any, regard was paid to the victims.
So, DOJ sent a letter and basically put them on notice. Seems the least they could do.

Could your post make any less sense than it already does?

You are making light of this?

Really?

"For example, federal officials said, when one mother asked a county attorney why an adolescent boy who assaulted her 5-year-old daughter had only received two years of community service, the attorney responded, "boys will be boys."
...
The Department of Justice letter came after nearly two years of inquiries by federal civil rights attorneys into allegations that officials in Missoula County systematically and unconstitutionally mishandled potentially dozens of sexual assault cases."

Sounds like a Republican saying this!

Prosecutors said “terrible things” to victims of sexual assault and told a mother whose 5-year-old daughter had been assaulted by an adolescent that “boys will be boys,” the report said.

When prosecutors told another woman they would not file charges after she reported a sexual assault, they told her “all you want is revenge,” according to the report.

Sure it could. It could imply that the prosecutor was a conservative.

I'd like to know what exactly this "assault" consisted of before presuming to judge whether the sentence was appropriate.

Both liberals and conservatives have a long record of making examples of children who are too young to consent to be sexual partners, by labeling them sexual predators, and it is contemptible.

Speaking as a Montanan, you are essentially correct that Missoula is by far the most liberal place in the state, but that being said, this story has very little to do with the D vs R politics.

Missoula is renowned for only enforcing certain laws, depending on what the city council sees as benefiting the city, and Missoula is a college town so laws like abusing drugs are usually overlooked.

Most of the sexual assult cases also fall back to the college and are either swept under the rug or handled on campus instead of a court of law.

In a town full of lawyers, not much is going to be done that may embarrass a state law school.
This is more of a case of the main job provider in town, (the college) having the power to make local law enforcement look the other way.

Sexual assults are treated VERY seriously in the rest of the state so it isn't something endemic to the state, but is more a local city problem that the state government should look closely at.

Problem is, most of the high state officials are graduates of that same university

Nothing new here.

Let me rephrase. Everyone else ought to find out what this assault consisted of, or else keep their traps shut about how unjust the sentence is.

Fred Van Valkenburg is, by all accounts including his own, a partisan Democrat by anyone's standards (he holds a county-wide elected office in a blue county, as others on this forum have mentioned)--the left's most sanctimonious blowhards (you know, the kind that would liken the state of Montana to a Middle Eastern theocracy) apparently lack the integral honesty to acknowledge perverts like Van Valkenburg when they surface from within their own ranks.

If you don't believe me, then feel free to discover Freddy's party affiliation for yourself:

Missoula County Democratic Party Central Committee

Now give me my ******* quarter.
