Barack Obama and Safeway: A love story

Pres Obama was at a Safeway distribution center in Maryland to praise Safeway for its corporate policies. It happens that I know someone who works at a Safeway distribution center here in Washington state. These are massive warehouses that ship out everything from tampons to Perrier water to broccoli out to grocery stores.

Only 10 years ago it was a pretty good gig. It paid middle class wages, and as long as you showed up consistently and put in a reasonable effort, you had a job for life. Over the last 10 years, and especially since 2008, workers have been unbelievably squeezed. A new computerized system was brought in that made life a living hell for workers. The old, lame, and halt now have to routinely work through breaks in order to make their 'production standards.' Injuries due to a rushed pace are common.

A new adversarial model has been adopted wherein management and workers are constantly at each other's throats. In the old days the senior workers cooperated with management to get the job done.

Workers of the world, be careful what you wish for.

The left claims this is why we need unions. Unions once served a crucial role and I don't deny that. But now many union bosses care more about themselves than the union members and tons of union dues are funneled to Democratic causes/candidates.

I say this is why we need an employee's job market. More money to go around and employees get to talk to employers themselves and fight for their own best interests. But, no, unions are better I guess. Just as long as they keep helping the Democrats get elected.

There is a statistical correlation between the downfall of unions and and the fall in earnings by the Middle Class. Just saying.

And lately we've seen tons of job losses due to unions.

This is also the reason Obama wants to essentially eliminate the immigration laws. Unlimited cheap labor brings down wages.

hmmm mixture. I've seen enough people blame unions when it was the corporate heads pillaging the financials. I kind of think we need a "different" sort of union. One with fewer union heads, and where the union heads have a set pay rate that is a combination of the rate the employees get, and the long term survival of the company. Something that encourages a good deal for a company and the employees both.

There were great unions that over time have become too much like the companys they fought. LOL. Stare into the Abyss long enough, and you'll find it staring back.

It's a double edged sword.

But, the reason we've seen job losses is not unions alone. Executive compensation is now as much as 900X worker compensation. That's an increase of well over 500%. Union wages are lower when adjusted for inflation.

Union jobs have also been the victim of automation and computerization.

It's not simple.

Essentially no.

You do understand that even if immigration reform were passed, that in no way rescinds current immigration laws...essentially?

Why is there a need to demonize unions among republicans and those on the right ? do you honestly believe all unions are bad ?
