From the 50s through the 70s there was a lot of serious political change going on in America and a lot of attention was on the protesters that were encouraging these changes. When protesters or activists would commit a crime for the sole purpose of being arrested to make a political statement, they took their jail time and were proud of it.

These days though, there are never any serious activist arrests, and when they do happen it's a bunch of whining and complaining about how making a political stand should somehow entitle them to a literal get out of jail free card. Today's activists seem to want to do all the stuff that would make them look good on tv without suffering any of the consequences of their actions.

Are today's activists just lazy or halfhearted or childish or what?

The anti-war protesters, and the activists who protest over the children living in poverty, the homeless and those living in hunger, well, they are taking a break because a democrat is president.

They aren't lazy, they're just politically partisan, Democratic Party hacks.

Yeah, that's definitely reality...

Occupy Wall Street - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
2011 United States public employee protests - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What you meant was protests you support, which even still is nonsense given the Tea Party, abortion protests, etc.

I think the significance of protests has decreased. People somehow know or feel that protesting doesn't change anything anymore. The establishment supported by secret services and mighty lobbies won't allow protests that could become a serious threat to the government. Any protester is considered a potential terrorist today and thus subject to all kinds of abuse.

Protests have become empty rituals, and the government knows it. The only remaining purpose is to feel better after some protesting.

At the end of the day, only violence can change something, which I don't say with a light heart...
