I feel for US Presidents and other dignitaries, no matter what political stripe, who need to make conversation in this sort of situation.
Seriously, can anyone here claim with a straight face that they've never had an attempt at small talk misfire horribly? There are no good options for any President.
Not talking to the checkout guy? Cold and aloof.
Humor misfired? What an idiot.
Nothing remarkable happening? We'll make something up.
The only senior official I've seen actually look as if he feels at ease in this sort of environment is, of all people, Joe Biden.
Uncle Joe is great in this sense, He loves flirting with women.
Most are repulsed though.
