The main winner of the night was the centre-right UMP, party of former president Nicolas Sarkozy. It was set to gain more than 100 municipalities, capturing a majority of larger towns from the ruling party, including Toulouse, Reims, Angers and St Etienne.

According to one exit poll, the UMP and its allies won 49 per cent of the vote in all towns larger than 3,500 inhabitants, against 42 per cent for the Socialists and other parties of the left, and 9 per cent for the FN.

The French seem to be realizing that socialism is a failed system. Why can't Americans figure it out? Maybe they will in 2014 and throw these Democrat crooks out of office.

No kidding.

I've discussed similar issues from a French research paper on healthcare.

The younger French people want more competition in their healthcare system.

Obamacare supporters demand even less competition than the monopolistic system they have now....which is one of the reasons healthcare in the US is more expensive than it needs to be.

In fact, with the exception of Britain and Sweden who have Socialist Soviet-stye Command Economic systems with their National Healthcare, the general trend has been for Euro-States to shift more toward the Free Market.

In part that is due to the fact that none of those States can pay the unfunded liabilities they owe.

How bizarre...

Mircea

France's Ruling Socialists Lose Big Again in Local Elections
Again? They are so far left that going right is the only possible direction (unless they want to become commies).

Every time an American cheers the demise of the "socialist" party in an election in Europe, or cheers the election of "conservatives" in Europe, I just feel compelled to inform them that European political parties, unless fascist, are pretty much: Center left, and further left.

Also you might remind some gloating American insurance company shills on here, that for those "younger Frenchmen" who have never lived with any type of free market competitive system of healthcare provision, to invite them to come on back here in 20 years or so of having a system morph into a general clusterf**k proximity of the American one and state irrevocably, they chose wisely.

European conservatives are roughly the same as American Democrats. American conservatives are the crazy ones.

Americans have figured it out. Does this look like socialism to you?

Most hospitals are not for profit. This does not preclude hospitals from making a profit. Some manage to make $ hundreds of millions in profit, each year. What they can't do it use those profits to pay dividends to their shareholders.

So instead, hospital healthcare systems use their profits to build and sustain their brand and either acquire the competition or put them out of business. If a competing healthcare system intends to enter/expand in their market, they throw $ millions at state lobbies, to defend their turf against competition.

They spend $millions on direct and trade association lobbies to make sure that Congress maintains the status quo. Congress does not bite the hands that feed them, regardless of which party holds the majority.

This is how free market healthcare works in the U.S.

Just for your information, all municipalities have always been socialist for decades....
The French just express discontent due to the ultra conservative policies taken by Hollande.
French socialists did not go to vote.

French people are absolutely not putting into question the French economic system , they are just acting as a check on executive power, like always during municipal elections.

Ultra conservative policies taken by Hollande? That's funny.

What has he done that is ultra conservative? If you think he is ultra conservative, how would you characterize Sarkozy's policies?
