Every Member of Congress Has Been Getting Monthly Hustler Mags for over 30 Years
Every month since 1983, every single member of Congress has received the same thing in the mail: a copy of
Hustler magazine in a manila envelope. National Journal
highlighted this interesting D.C. tidbit today, and how said congresspersons, amusingly enough, have no way of legally stopping the mailings.
The U.S. Postal Service tried to stop the mailings after complaints in the 80s, but the U.S. District Court in D.C. ruled that members of Congress are not forced to read the magazine, and it’s only sent once a month; therefore it is not that big of a burden on members of Congress that requires any sort of legal action.
Some congressional staffers looking for a laugh told National Journal anonymously what they like doing with the magazines. One of them said, “For a while, the interns, after their initial shock and befuddlement, were directed to save the Hustlers. We eventually gave a coworker the whole year’s supply for Secret Santa and then she would mail them to her boyfriend in Iraq. Certainly one of the least-heralded ways the office supported our troops.”
God bless America.
