People in this country live in double-wide trailers and pay massive amount of taxes to support a bloated military. Defense budget is $520 billion, VA budget is $160 billion...Tea Party total silence on this spending they like to focus on the ACA...Pay and benefits to the average enlisted person $92,000...no wonder they love the troops in Germany.

As mentioned we do not need the massive forces form the Days of Regan and Gorby. We still need to have a presents just incase the unthinkable may happen. We commitments to NATO and Europe. Like it or not! Speak of wasting money the 'Obama Care " is a money pit that will not see a ROI to the American citizen.

America is a World Power and we must be leaders in bringing countries together or the latter. Mother Russia and the Islam Threat taking over the world as we know it?
No offense, but the current US troop strength in Germany would crumble if faced with one single armored brigade. The Bundeswehr is professional, motivated and well equipped. You don't get Leopard 2s, Marders, Tornados and Eurofighters without "spending a dime".
You just supported my point. Let the Germans pay for their own damned defense. They almost took over the world. I think they can handle it alone.
Germany is an interesting country. I was stationed there for 3 years in the mid 70s and then for another year 10 years later. It was quite an experience. i could see the need for US troops being there then, not so sure about today.

This is also partly the reason, as the US Army itself likes being able to offer postings in Germany. Who wants to join the Army and be stuck in some barracks at home, soldiers like everyone else like variety and the overseas postings to allied countries. The chance to explore Europe, enjoy the beautiful scenery and cities, numerous beer festivals and of course drive on the autobahns with no speed limits being big attractions.
I get the impression the US Army itself likes Germany and makes the case to stay far more than anyone else, indeed a number of US Service Personnel have settled in Germany over the years.
We keep troops in Germany to keep Germany from attacking France and/or anyone else nearby.
