I find it laughable that a kid can get an adult prison sentence but can't drink or smoke or even get a job or have a bank account in their own name until a certain age. Not that I'm for teenagers engaging in some of these activities, but you get what I mean.
Not much a reader, are you? This has been well documented by legal analysts for the past decade. The explosion of Federal laws has made it virtually impossible to avoid breaking them. There are numerous books on the subject. Former New Jersey Superior Court Judge Andrew Napolitano is an expert on the subject.
It depends what you mean by "child". I think up to 12 is automatically a juvenile issue. From 12 to 14 they should take the maturity level, seriousness of the crime and abstract thinking skills into account on an individual level with the burden on the State to show the young person should be treated as an adult. From 14 to 18 it should be big-boy sentencing for serious crimes unless the young person's attorney can prove that the defendant is delayed for his or her age.
Many would say the killers of James Bulger deserve to be hung, even though they were only 10 years old when they did it ... due to the extreme brutality of the crime.
Does a civilized society ever put minors to death? Would you be opposed or in favor of this in extreme cases?

Considering the average American commits three felonies a day that certainly should eliminate the over population problem in many cities mighty quick.
