South Carolina has an official state dog, state butterfly, state dance, state fish, and a state reptile among other official 'state' stuff. A move to make the Woolly Mammoth the state fossil has hit a roadblock with two Republican Senators demanding that the bill be amended to say that God made the fossils.
The Lt. Gov. blocked the proposed amendment because it introduced a new subject. He has since amended the amendment to describe the Columbian Mammoth as “created on the Sixth Day with the beasts of the field.” The bill is now in limbo.
These guys don't miss any opportunity, no matter how small, to inject their religion into politics.
Recognizing a state fossil? Waste of money all the way around.
That's a valid argument. Saying "We won't recognize a state fossil unless the bill comes with an extra serving of Jesus" isn't. It sure does cement one's impression of South Carolina politics.
