$1 billion? Seriously...?

The right-wing whines about the $500 billion we spend in welfare & entitlements, now they have resorted to whining about $1 billion for the military to help our Europeon Allies.

Looks like the only way to get Congress to agree to cutting the defense budget is for Obama to ask for an increase. Maybe he should ask for a decrease in capital gains taxes and a resolution condemning free ponies for all Americans.

Obama asks for $1B to boost US military in Europe

Didn't Margaret Thatcher say that it was absurd for 300 Million Europeans to rely on defense from 200 Million Americans against Russia?

Today there are over 500 Million people living in the European Union with a $17 Trillion economy compared to 144 Million living in Russia with a $2.5 Trillion economy. The EU does not even include the UK, which has an economy equal to that of Russia. Why can't they spend their own money to defend themselves?

The European Union should start taking a bigger role in easing their own tensions against Russia the geo-political foe -- unless they want to pay us the $1 Billion for the extra protection, they should do it themselves. We waste so much money being "world police" while European countries spend their money on their own people and not their military.
The UK is part of the EU, as for the money isn't it in order to make US Troops more deployable as part of the new NATO Response Force.

Obama seeks $1 billion for new US mission in Europe - News - Stripes

BBC News - European Reassurance Initiative: Obama announces $1bn fund

The US currently has two combat units in Europe, the 2nd Cavalry Regiment based in Germany and the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team based in Italy, the other unit the US has designated as part of the NATO reaction force is the 1st (Iron horse) Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division based at Fort Hood in Texas.

http://www.eur.army.mil/organization...tSheet_RAF.pdf

It's really up to the US as to what forces they wish to deploy, however it shouldn't be forgotten that it's estimated that Britain alone has spent over $50 Billion USD supporting the US War on Terror in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2003 with some estimates putting the total cost to Britain at nearer to $70 Billion USD. On top of that are casualties which you can never put a price upon.

Afghanistan war has cost Britain more than £37bn, new book claims | World news | The Guardian

I do however sympathise with Americans who question the amount being spent particularly in light of countries such as Germany (and others) who don't meet the NATO agreed 2% GDP Defence Spending quota.

The not so secret is while it's acknowledged that most NATo countries need to up their military spending, the US in no form or fashion wants a fully functional integrated EU military. Nor to we want an individual EU country with capabilities to overpower another. American hegemony has made American business a lot of money and has kept the peace on the European continent for nearly 70 years, and we plan to keep it that way.

You mean Obama doesn't want to keep the money for more social engineering?

Unbelievable.

You are forgetting the trade between Europe and Russia.
While the US is strutting around threatening Russia, Europe is backing off because of their trade deals.

Why the feigned outrage? The One stated that Russian threat was a figment of Romney's 1980s imagination, lest you forget.

Lol... the right-wing lunatics on this forum are hilarious.

If Obama doesn't start a nuclear war with Russia, he's "weak" and "ineffective."

If Obama takes any action against Russia he's "a big spender who's wasting our tax dollars."'

We get it - nothing he does will ever meet the approval of the far right, not one of whom can propose an even remotely reasonable solution to the Russia issue, and not one of which can maintain a consist world view other than "Whaaa!!! I don't like the black guy in the White House!"

Yes, LOL. I can't wait until there's a black or brown Repub in the White House and you partisans get the race card thrown right back in your faces anytime you disagree with anything. You'll only have yourselves to blame...
