"It is unknowable how long that conflict [the war in Iraq] will last. It
could last six days, six weeks. I doubt six months." -in Feb. 2003
Quote:
Bill Crystal - Weekly Editor
One month into the conflict, in April 2003, he declared that the "battles of Afghanistan and Iraq
have been won decisively and honorably." That same month, Kristol maintained that there is "almost no evidence ... at all" that "the Shia can't get along with the Sunni, and the Shia in Iraq just
want to establish some kind of Islamic fundamentalist regime."
I was hoping the OP's post was going to quote the hilarious idiocy on this forum, where one day Obama is "weak" for not sending troops to Iraqi, and the next day he's "trying to save his reputation" when he sends troops there. On and on the whining goes - no matter what he does, he's "wrong."
As for the rest of it, yep, our leadership completely failed under that mysterious president who remains unmentioned around here... what was his name? He ruled for 8 years and his cronies completely hosed up Iraqi... Was it Obama? Because Obama is the only guy who's ever been president, and everything that's happened for the past 20+ years is his fault, or so one would believe reading this forum.
Seriously though, Bush and cronies were idiots and they had no idea what they were doing. That mess over there will continue forever because Iraqi isn't even a real nation - it's a bunch of tribes who hate each other stuck together in semi-random borders - and they won't stop killing each other until they are all dead.
Hmmm. You missed the one that was more recent by Biden. I'm sure it was an oversight by you......you know the one. About how Iraq was Obama's greatest achievement.
Great thread. There has been a revival of "we were right" among those who supported this war to begin with. That Obama is to blame for withdrawing from Iraq, not Bush for invading in the 1st place.
If 8 years wasn't enough, how many would be enough?
It sucks what is going on there but we do not need any part of it. Let the Sunnis and Shia duke it out. Going into war on Nouri al-Maliki's side essentially means going into war on Syria and Iran's side. Our alliances in the Mideast are arbitrary as hell and this is really showing that. "Our guy" in Iraq is aligned with our enemies in Syria and Iran, and "the terrorists" in Iraq are the same people who are "the brave freedom fighter rebels" in Syria. Like what? It would be funny if it weren't so sad.

Nation building never works unless you have military bases(police stations) throughout the countryside.
Ask Germany, Italy and Japan....
