Pretty sure it's not special to judge have the same rights as everyone else .
When I was a hiring manager I wasn't allowed to fire one of the worst employees of all time because she was a lesbian and therefore in a protected class. Please explain how that would be having the same rights as everyone.

I agree, if she is a sub-par employee then that is all there is to it. Her sexuality is irrelevant. Unfortunately, in this sue happy society where people will "lawyer up" at the drop of a hat, your company probably wanted to avoid an expensive lawsuit, as well as some potential bad publicity.
News flash: Just because someone is finally getting the same rights that you've enjoyed all along does not mean they're being taken away from you.
