It's a Frankenstein's monster for the Republican party that was organized under the auspices of populism.
And dependent on enough useful dupes believing it was a real grassroots movement about small government, and not the ploy by big monied interests that it truly is, in order to be successful.

And many dupes happily jumped aboard. Not because they truly wanted "smaller government" because that might cut into their entitlements, but because it gave them a platform to rant about all those "others" who were ruining America for wanting the same kind of entitlements they themselves were enjoying.

France, UK, Germany all have been moving more to the right just like the Tea Party has done in this country. The Left is scared to death of the Tea Party.

If you Americans had more of a clue about politics in general there would be no dispute about what and who the tea party represents. It's nothing new in the least and has been used successfully many times during the last century, especially in Europe to fool the people as to it's real aims. It's interesting to note that almost every extreme right movement began as a populist movement that was opposed to oligarchy, oversized and overbearing government and was, so they stated a movement dedicated to liberty and freedom. The two best examples are the Fascists in Italy and the Nazi movement in Germany. Mussolini was an out and out socialist until he sold his soul to the 1%. The same thing with Hitler. Both of these leaders would never have come to power at all if they stated their intensions in the first place. It takes lots of money to fund a political movement and experience shows clearly that "The piper calls the tune" to one degree or another. "Just follow the Money" if you really want to know the aims of the Tea Party. When the likes of the Kochs are major contributers, you know full well the aims are anti labour, anti environment and all in all a return to the good old days of the gilded age. The problem is that those good old days were only good for a very small % of Americans and were especially bad for a large % of the population. It's nothing more than a regressive, reactionary, anti progress, anti intellectual and truly repugnant movement.

How is it illegal? My understanding is that anyone who didn't vote in the D primary could vote in the R primary.

Open systems like this are intended to avoid the problem of candidates running to the right/left during the primary and then running to the center in the general election. The intent is to favor more moderate candidates. In this case, it worked exactly as advertised.

As this article well illustrates, the Tea Party is nothing but a reactionary, racist and repugnant, national disgrace for the USA.
That is like Republicans doing a write in for Mickey Mouse on the democratic ticket and voting Mickey Mouse in.

The democrats want to manipulate the Republican primaries.. they voted against the tea party candidate on the ticket by voting for his non tea party opponent. Kind of sleazy manipulative voting.

Then that means the D will win in the general. Sounds like a good plan for the left to me!

Again, in an open primary system, what happened in this race is exactly what is supposed to happen - the more centrist nominee wins the primary.

No, the black Democrats want to have a say in who the Senator who represents them will be. It's a given that in Mississippi it will be a Republican, so the only choice they have is which Republican it will be. Are you saying they should have absolutely no input into who represents them, even though an open primary allows them that right, because it will be someone of the opposite party? That sure sounds like you're trying to disenfranchise a whole group of voters from voting for their choice of representation based on their party affiliation.

" We've spent billions in the decades since then without moving the needle on poverty."
To the contrary, I have personally met dozens of blacks and poor whites who have been able to move up and out of abject poverty with help from some of the government programs.
Of course many have still not made it, some because of their own weaknesses but others because there hasn't been enough jobs for everyone since around the sixties.

Both the OP and the writer of the article know full well what happened. BUT they need to provide cover for their team.

Liberal Democrats crossed over to vote in the runoff of a Republican Primary. These voters will be voting for the democrat in the election this fall, but because of the rules, they got their shot to make sure the most liberal republican will be up against the even more liberal democrat.

This was NOT about the Mississippi Republicans putting up their candidate. It was subversion. done on purpose to thwart conservatives.

With typical and predictable aplumb, liberals have stepped up to provide cover and lie to the world about what is going on. Why? Because that is what they do. period.

do something dirty, then blame racist republicans for their dirty tricks.

Again - it wasn't dirty. It is exactly what open primary systems are designed to do - encourage some cross-over voting to make sure that the eventual nominee is more centrist and therefore provides more of a choice for the voters in the general election.
