But it's been like that for a long time.
I was in college in the late 80's in a CS program (engineering) and as I posted earlier only 3 girls were in the graduating class. It seemed to me more Asians and Indians than Whites though.

The truth is that even the best education is not going to make all people interested in or talented in specific areas. Nor will it offset a bad home life, poverty or any number of other human conditions. It can be there, but it can't be forced onto anyone and the environment a child is raised in, coupled with interest and talent, is always going to trump it.

If you want to get to the very root you'd end up removing children from their parents at birth. It's the only real solution yet it creates entirely new problems doesn't it? We can only muck with people so much in an attempt to be fair and whatnot.

Of course the US government has a role to play to ensure that tech companies aren't practicing racial or gender discrimination in hiring practices. The government can also encourage tech companies to look at schools they may not normally look at for candidates.
Jackson is full of crap as usual. Instead of trying to fix the core problem - too few blacks and females choosing tech fields BEFORE college, he blames employers.

Tech employers hire people that can produce. They already hire people with dark skin, who barely speak English, they don't care where they were born - and you think they are the problem?

The fact is that there just aren't enough graduating.
Of course there are things that companies can do. Why be dishonest? They can take high school students who might be interested in that kind of career and give them internships. They can visit high schools in their surrounding areas and let those students know that they'd be interested in hiring these once they get their degrees.

Finally many companies get comfortable recruiting from a relatively few schools. Companies can expand their search.

In terms of you describing what the big tech companies would love to do. Lol

This idea of enough graduating is your word choice what does that mean exactly? There aren't enough graduating to do?

Companies employ people that meet their needs. If people hope to be employed, it's their job to make themselves marketable to companies.

I already posted a link. Women getting CS degrees peaked in the mid 80's at 37%. In 2011 it was less than 12%.

And both corporations and universities take on HS interns. But those interns have to have taken physics, Algebra II and a programming/computer science fundamentals class.

How do you know what the core problem is? How do you know how to fix the core problem?

I submit that if people who are high school and college students see tech firms recruiting at their school as wanting to give them a chance, that might impact how many students pick what major.

But more importantly, there are thousands of people who get engineering degrees every year, so they exist.

Tech employers hire people for all sorts of reasons just like all companies.

Another who purports to know what tech companies think and or feel.

What does that link prove in relation the what Mr Jackson was saying at the point of this thread?

Newsflash for you - we all already do this because we need more people majoring and choosing STEM degrees. Seriously, look into it. Most tech companies already participate in all of these types of things and more. Personally, I think it's more of a cultural issue. If being a programmer were as 'cool' as being an athlete, for example, perhaps we would see more blacks pursuing the profession. While full on geekery has risen in the cool quotient, it's primarily seen as 'cool' with white males. Who knows what the future brings though. One thing, I know, is that blaming the companies, as Jackson is wont to do, will not solve anything.

Jackson is pretty much claiming discrimination and wants the EEOC to step in and investigate.
