Containing pond breaks releasing tens of millions of gallons of toxic waste into area rivers and lakes.

I don't think the Keystone Pipeline is such a good idea because oil sands are the most toxic, most polluting lowest quality form of oil in the world. And the mining process creates disaster on an epic scale. I don't consider myself an environmentalist or even an Obama supporter but I think it is disturbing for any normal person when they see what it actually does.

Here's what a normal mining day looks like with no unexpected disasters (its still a disaster).
Millions of acres of pristine Canadian forests, lakes and rivers turned into a barren wasteland on a daily basis.

It's a copper and gold mine.

The mine was warned about this, as much as a year ago. They did nothing.
It's bad, really bad.

I think governments need to start learning that businesses don't listen to anybody unless you threaten them with massive fines or prison time for the managers and/or owners

It's copper and gold mine, wearing any jewelry? How about that computer you are using?

It's fairly easy to attack these things when it's the fossil fuel industry but if you want Ipod's you need copper and gold.

Oops I stand corrected.

When I saw 'Canada' and 'disaster' in the same headline I assumed it was caused by the tar sands. But it easily could have been because they use the same kind of storage ponds to contain the waste-water from tar sands mining.

But....but....I thought businesses should police themselves.
(Evidently, they don't)
They didn't want to spend any money to avoid this and the taxpayers will be left holding the bag, not to mention the collapse of salmon stock and tourism in that area.

We should not build anything because of a disaster that may or may not happen?

What would have happened if the mine would have done what they were told to do back in 2011, and then talked to the mine again about a year ago....
