Though I don't know much about VT, sadly what you said is true. I have seen it at affluent college campuses where rich kids abuse drugs, but not the cheap stuff. Mommy & Daddy must not realize their rich brats are spending their allowances on "the good stuff".

Vermont has a large stable base of workers, not too high housing costs and an above median income.

Vermont QuickFacts from the US Census Bureau

Vermont K-12 does not have a large group of poor and they have a HS dropout rate of less than 7%.

It's a state full of working people that take responsibility for themselves and their families.

Pretty much what the rest of the US USED TO BE LIKE.

Socialism worked in the non-homogenous USSR for 80 years. Try again. But, hey, never get in the way of a RWNJ when he starts to rant about those stupid dark-colored people who ruin everything and take all our womin folk

I've lived all but the first 6 years of my life in rural NH and less rural VT.

Monetarily.... NH may not have income tax but their property taxes, car registration, and other fees border on crippling. Every state gets their tithe one way or the other, whether you like it or not.

Burlington VT is really it's own little state within a state and those of us not in it really get sick of hearing about it. The rest of Vermont (south of BTV) and the rest of New Hampshire (north of Manch) is incredibly similar whether certain citizens want to admit it or not. There are plenty of deeply "Conservative" folks in the NEK and plenty of "liberal" artsy types in the Whites. For all it's chuff from "Free Staters" in NH, they elected an all Dem. slate last election.

There are a LOT of people on either side of the river who run their own businesses and do just fine up here, myself included. Sure, the service industry is big, but why not? It's a beautiful land full of mountains, skiing, lakes and more. If rich flatlanders want to come up and enjoy it, we'll gladly find a way to make an honest buck off of it. Isn't that the kind of "free market capitalism" the GOP wants us to practice?

"Vermont does not have as many of the population subgroups that have high unemployment rates, especially young people and people of color, as most states do, or as many as the nation as a whole has."

"Over the past twelve months the number of unemployed Vermonters has fallen by 2,400, a number consistent with a declining unemployment rate. But the number of Vermonters working or looking for work "the labor force" has declined by more than 5,000. The reduction in the number of unemployed is good news for the unemployment rate, but not when it’s due to Vermonters dropping out of the labor force. Indeed, 3,000 fewer Vermonters are working today than a year ago."

Let's not bring intelligence and facts to this thread. That's like eating a fine meal while crouching behind the dumpster behind Denny's after a 2 week long garbage haulers strike.

Somethnig that also needs to be added is New Englanders take the time to get to know their neighbors and once they know who you are and what you can do then they will lend a hand when you needed a hand up or a second pair of hands to get a job done. Of course you are also expected to help out if a neighbor needs a hand. Now it takes years after an outsider has moved into a community to gain this trust and exceptance and become a member of the community. New Englanders are not very talkative. A reporter once bet Calvin Coolidge that he could get the notoriously silent Cal to say more than 3 words. After a few minutes, Cals response to the reporter was "You Lose."

The people in Mississippi voting Republican are not the ones committing felonies, dropping out of school, getting knocked-up and living on welfare.
