Fighting Irish of Notre dame? That WAS def a slur against those of us of Irish family not too long ago. The difference is we see it as a joke in 2014 and "join the party" on St Patrick's day.
Fighting Irish wasn't a slur though, it was something the mostly Irish Notre Dame football players sort of adopted...

No, the difference is one is a regional term, that can be used as a slur, where as we wouldnt even be having this discussion if someone named a baseball team " The N$%gers ", why do people see the term redskins any differently ?
