Schools are now getting into this now. And it's an MRAP, not a bearcat.
And you guys were worried about the militarization of the police......

They got it to "rescue the kids".
You think they'll park it at the bus barn ?

Tanks at the school gates? San Diego school police acquires its own MRAP | World news | theguardian.com

The San Diego Unified School District Police Department has acquired its own vehicle, known as a MRAP, and expect it to be operational by October.
..
Police intended to use it to rescue children – be it from rampaging gunmen or natural disasters, he said. “When we have an emergency at a school, we’ve got to get in and save kids.”
..
San Diego’s school police obtained the MRAP in April and have been busy modifying it at a transportation centre in the east of the city. Details emerged only this week. Critics were not mollified by the fact the district got the vehicle, valued at $700,000, for free.

Maybe they are using it as the "patient" at their auto mechanic school.

How many kids could that "rescue?" 20? Yea, sure, ok, every life is precious, and if my kid was one of the 20 rescued, I probably would be glad. But how many more kids could be rescued by diverting that money to other resources instead of this money pit? They should at least be honest and admit it's for the protection of the responding officers and not the kids.

Nothing says safety like a MRAP crashing through the walls of a classroom. Certainly they will need the big gun to soften up the wall first. Kids if you survive the lunatic shooter remember that is just a warm up. You now have to survive the help sent in your behalf.

Has nothing to do with "the children". Will it have an active cannon? Because, you know, you can't rescue kids without a cannon.

They should sell it and use the money for education.

They could use it to go find truants.
Imagine that puppy parked on the driveway of your home when you skipped school ?

I can see an application for it in the aftermath of an Earthquake, though.

Growing up in the 60's and 70's, I don't recall any of my schools having a pickup truck much less an Mrap. The teachers and administrators all had their personal vehicles, but I'm pretty sure there were no school-owned vehicles, with the possible exception of sedans for use in student-driving class.

We did have monkey bars and jungle gyms. Nowadays not only would that be 'racist,' but if you dropped on your noggin from the jungle gym, the Mrap would plow over everything to save you. Perhaps plowing over you in the process.
