If each household spent $0.18 more per month, America could quadruple its renewable electricity by 2030 - Electronic Products

Very interesting story if the figure is true.

We need to invest in power storage more than anything else. What's the point in producing green energy if we keep wasting what we already produce? I've heard figures as high as 60% of our energy production vanishes into the ether.

The numbers work out to roughly $248 million annually (115 million households per 2010 census * $0.18 per month * 12 months).

Current renewable output (in thousands of MWh) ~= 522,400, multiplied by the cost for each different source of renewable according to their percentage of that total, the total cost of renewable energy (using US DOE's own numbers) for 2013 was $56.124 billion.

So I am not sure how adding 0.44% ($248 million extra per year / $56.124 billion) to something annually will quadruple it in 15 years. By my knowledge of exponents and arithmetic, I get 1.0044 ^ 15 = 1.068, or an increase of 6.8%. not 300% (which is percent speak for quadrupling)

So every household spending another $0.18 per month will increase our total renewable output/usage by 6.8% by 2030, not quadruple it.

Math is hard.

Indeed. A quarter-billion dollars is "between the couch cushions" money for the US congress. With all the $ the government has sunk into subsidizing renewables, I can't believe they'd have stopped $250 million a year short if it would have made that much difference. The suggestion that there's that much low-hanging fruit still hanging on the renewable's tree is ridiculous.

Why don't we remove all federal subsidy from all energy companies and let the free market decide?

Absolutely! While we're at it, why not remove all the absurd cost/red tape roadblocks stopping nuclear power. By all means, let the marketplace decide how best to power their homes, cars, businesses, etc.
