Not only was he chomping on the gum like a schoolgirl but he swaggered in. I have to wonder if the same behavior would be shown with certain other countries. This time seemed almost intentional. Message sent, message received.

Indeed. Too many people aren't aware of these things or think they're silly and are shocked when they run into them. I once interviewed for a job and a couple of others were as well. I got the job, and the boss told me later that the reason he hired me was because I was the one that wore a suit. The others didn't get it and went on without understanding why they didn't get hired. Details matter.
