All this says is that they won't be deported and that they'll be allowed to work legally. How do you go from that to that they are now "new Americans?" That's quite the leap.

Also they are going to be paying SS and income taxes. What do you think that they will demand for that?
And in 10 years they will legalize another 4 million and so on and so forth. Maybe I missed something but how will doing the secure the borders from other illegals sneaking in.
If Obama really wanted to make a statement he would declare any children born in this country to an illegal alien is not automatically granted citizenship.

Anchor babies are something that helps illegal immigrants stay here.

He cannot do that. It would take a constitutional amendment to do that, and that will not happen.
The 14th amendment, which ended slavery, declared anyone born here an US citizen.

Of course until the 1960s, there were no illegal immigrants. It became an issue when more non white immigrants came in large numbers. And while it's rather obvious Mexicans and Central Americans sneak across the border, no one is up in arms about European immigrants who come over here and illegally overstay their tourist visas (yes, illegal immigrants can be white too).
With all that said, I am not saying Obama's move is a good idea. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, I am somewhat apathetic on the subject personally. But as far a politically, the US public did reject a broad scale amnesty when they voted in the Republican Congress. I guess Obama basically said go to hell, I'm still the President. LOL
Obviously he did this for two reasons, more potential voters for the Democratic party AND the US Chamber of Commerce had been lobbying for some sort of legalization. Certain businesses wanted this and Obama delivered.
The true reason illegal immigrants come is because businesses hire them AND nobody talks about fining or jailing business owners, managers, etc for illegally hiring. Why is that? That would probably make the problem go away, but it will never happen.
Even until the 80s, employers were not legally required to verify the identity of workers. When Reagan passed a broad amnesty, in exchange for doing this Congress mandated that employers had to verify the identity/legal status of employees.
